Christmas Limited Edition 2013
Gibsons eleventh annual limited edition Christmas puzzle, painted
by the talented Marcello Corti depicts the last day of school before the
Christmas holidays begin. Lights sparkle around the bauble-laden tree as
a host of happy faces rush through the snow, ready to celebrate the festive
holiday with their awaiting parents who stand with the merry lollipop man.
Marcello Corti was born in 1961 in Bergamo, in Northern Italy and
transformed his passion for photography into a profession when he
was 20, working with publishers to create art books and photography.
Like many artists in the late eighties, he discovered the computer which
transformed his graphics work and has since worked with a number of
advertising agencies in Milan. With his partner Barbara Gerardi, who is also
an illustrator, Marcello founded a website which promotes illustration,
graphics and photography. These days, Marcello concentrates mainly on
pictorial illustration, with the beautiful Italian surroundings being the
main source of inspiration.
His glorious festive jigsaw
contains a serial numbered
certificate, making the puzzle
a unique collector’s gift as well as
the perfect festive entertainment.

This month we’re continuing our review of the stunning new range of puzzles from the folks at Ravensburger in Oxfordshire. The company has a long history of developing designs based on
the most popular licenced characters, and their autumn range continues this tradition. Product Manager Sarah Stevens chatted to us about the processes involved in creating licenced puzzles.
“The development and design process for licenced characters is probably more complicated and involved than most people realise. We’re usually given some existing design elements to work with (perhaps individual character poses) but we then have to take these individual pictures and build scenes or montages, to ensure we have a really good jigsaw picture”. Sarah continued “With
licenced products we are dealing with characters that “belong” to someone else, so everything we do has to be approved by the rights owners – such as Disney or the BBC.

There are 7 new 500 piece puzzles to tempt you. Highland Heroes by John Austin, Fellow of the Guild of Railway Artists, shows steam engines thundering their way across the Scottish hills. Just Desserts is a great way to enjoy all those wicked puddings without worrying about calories; Lovely Seaside is a naïve and colourful art scene from the company’s American range; Kitten in a Basket shows lots of fabulous felines photographed by British photographer Greg Cuddiford; Quaint Shops shows an elegant cityscape with unique shops and chic cafes (we’d love to people watch here!); and finally there are 2 “fantasy” designs. Magical Unicorns shows just that, beautiful creatures within an enchanting landscape filled with flora and fauna complete with a magnificent castle shown atop a distant hill.

Gibsons are sad to announce that Thomas Kinkade, the “Painter of Light” died on Friday 7th April at the age of 54. Considered to be one of the most successful artists of all time, his distinctively sentimental paintings are said to be hanging in one out of every twenty homes in the United States. Many artists have attempted to copy the style of Thomas Kinkade, but none have come near to matching his ability with texture and light. He was a unique talent. Gibsons has been publishing licensed Thomas Kinkade jigsaw puzzles for over ten years.

Having been asked many times for Frames & Glue we thought we would research the market and give you our insight on how best to preserve your favourite jigsaw pictures.
Frames do not need to be expensive - They can be purchased in many outlets or custom made to an exact fit, clip frames are a really cheap option too, but remember you will need to glue
your jigsaw so it doesn’t fall apart. However the upside is the joy of having great pictures at quite low cost.
You may purchase frames at your local department store, art store or frame shop, or find great, old frames at garage sales carboots, markets, charity shops or thrift shops.

Commercial art played the central role in 20th century advertising, until photography and the digital age changed the way we market and promote our products. It was the same with rail transportation. When railways first appeared in the mid-19th century, there was no photography, no lithography and indeed no real need to advertise.

About Jigsaws
In the UK more people enjoy jigsaws each year than any other table game. The Stave Company of America holds the record for the most expensive jigsaw – it was made in 1993 and was sold for over £8,000. Stave makes many jigsaws each year that are eagerly snapped up at prices of over £3,000 each.
The most expensive (and most prized) jigsaws are still made out of wood and cut using a jigsaw. A skilled operator can cut up to 100 pieces per hour.

How about this for a challenge - incorporating history, geography, future development, education and a great insight into how these Cities have changed over the years.
These are the first two in the series and unlike most maps give you an excellent view of our major cities from historic info to future projects. There are further Cities to come …
including Hong Kong, Paris, Sydney and many more major Cities. It’s an excitingly different theme which we couldn’t wait to put together. So we thought you might like it too!
Although not cheap to buy, we’re sure it will be a jigsaw that will be completed many times, by all members of the family and friends.
How best to describe these???
The ultimate jigsaw puzzle and the first to use time as the fourth dimension!

Dogs for the Disabled was started in 1986 by Frances Hay, who had become disabled herself at the age of 16. Her own dog had helped her to overcome some of her physical
problems, giving her welcome friendship, companionship and independence. It was this special rapport that inspired her to realise a dog could help disabled people in many
ways.
