Battle of Britain 1000pc Jigsaw Puzzle

During the summer of 1940 Britain endured numerous raids by squadrons of bombers of the German Luftwaffe. Whilst it is the Spitfire that is credited with turning the tide in the Battle of Britain, the facts are that it was the Hurricane that was responsible for shooting down the greatest number of enemy aircraft. In one typical raid on September 15th, over 100 Heinkel 111 and Dornier bombers swarmed over the London docklands and East End, where to their surprise they encountered 50 squadrons of Hurricanes and Spitfires. Some of the raiders made it back to France, but many came down before reaching our southern coastline. The Spitfire was designed by Reginald J Mitchell and the combination of the classic elliptical wing and the powerful Merlin engine, provided legendary manoeuvrability and speed. The Hurricane however, proved to be the workhorse of Fighter Command. Designed by Sir Sydney Camm, it boasted a robust construction that provided a stable gun platform and an ability to sustain a very large amount of battle damage.

The war in Europe was over. Within minutes of the announcement, many thousands of people gathered on the streets of Great Britain to celebrate the event. Bonfires were lit, street parties took place and in London over 50,000 people filled the streets between Trafalgar Square and Big Ben as three Lancaster bombers flew overhead, dropping red and green flares. The Royal Family together with Winston Churchill came out onto the balcony at Buckingham Palace to be greeted and cheered by the waiting crowds.
